On behalf of the entire faculty and staff, I welcome you all to the 2018 – 2019 school year. A new school year is always exciting for students, families, and educators. This fresh start allows us to establish new goals and embrace challenges in order to achieve greater levels of success.
As an exam school, one of our primary goals is to provide students with a rigorous educational experience that will allow them to compete for seats in the top colleges and universities around the world. As we strive to continuously meet this goal, we consistently examine our assessment data to develop an instructional focus. This school year, we will continue to implement evidence-based reading and problem solving strategies that enable students to successfully engage in cognitively demanding tasks. This past spring, our mean SAT scores in both mathematics and English increased as a result of our collective efforts.
In preparation for our students’ return to school, it is important to highlight a few of the educational opportunities and key partnerships that will support our community with socio-emotional learning and post-secondary success. These educational opportunities include:
- STEM pathways focused on Computer Science, Engineering, and Health Science.
- Aerospace Engineering course.
- Becoming a Man (BAM) program for our grade 10 young men.
- OneGoal program for our grade 11 and 12 students.
- Massachusetts Maritime Academy dual enrollment for students in grades 10–12 that can lead to a full-tuition scholarship when admissions criteria is met.
Families, it is our hope that you become and continue to be active members of our school community. Take ownership of your child’s success by attending open house sessions, school parent council meetings, school assemblies and information sessions. It is during these meetings that decisions involving your child’s education are made. Please be sure to explore this website and sign up for the School Parent Council listserv to ensure you are updated regarding important school events and opportunities on a consistent basis. In addition, please reinforce the importance of attending school everyday and on time because this will support their success.
Students, in addition to putting forth your best efforts in all of your classes, I encourage you to participate in enrichment programs and extra-curricular activities such as after school community service, job shadowing and internships, school sports, poetry and essay writing with 826 Boston, and much more. For academic support after school, students are encouraged to go to the Tiger Zone, 826 Boston, and our library, which is open Monday – Thursday until 4 p.m. In addition, teachers will continue to provide after school support along with community volunteers for academic tutoring. Please explore this website for a full list of opportunities.
It is my firm belief that shared responsibility and collaboration between the school and home will allow us to build on the successful practices in place so that we work as a unified community toward student success. Together, we can and will uphold the school’s mission of ensuring all students “reach their full potential and become leaders who will shape the direction of society.” Again, we welcome you and look forward to working with you throughout the school year to provide a safe and productive learning environment that supports the success of all students.
