Dear O’Bryant student

If you are a new student entering our school, congratulations and thank you for choosing the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science for your high school career. For our rising 8th grade students, welcome back to what we know will be a successful school year. Together, we are excited to welcome over 330 students into the class of 2023!

Research shows that grade 9 is a foundational year as it sets the trajectory for young people’s high school career. It is the time that Grade Point Averages (GPAs) are calculated and students start establishing their student profiles for colleges. To prepare the class of 2023 for success, we are holding an exciting week-long Grade 9 Summer Academy from MondayAugust 20th-Friday, August 24th from 8:30am to 12:30pm.

In this week-long program, we have designed a preparation course targeted to support students in English Language Arts and mathematics. We will also have an advisory course targeted to support students in establishing goals, promoting organizational skills, and calculating their Grade Point Average (GPA). The week will begin with a brief parent information session on Monday, August 20th from 8:30am to 9:30am and will conclude with a field day and cookout on Friday, August 24th! Snacks will be included.

Our hope is that all students will be able to participate in the Grade 9 Summer Academy. Please RSVP for the event by signing up on our website ( at the top tab entitled “Summer Programs.” If you have any questions, please reach out by phone at (617) 635-9932 or by email to Anita Sutton at
